What Not to Do in the 48 Hours After Your Treatment

Aftercare lists are often long and poorly explained. Here is the short version: what really affects the result during the first 48 hours, and why.

The First Few Hours: Don’t Lie Down

Avoid lying down for the first 4 to 6 hours. Lying flat too soon may encourage the product to shift. On the first night, it is best to sleep on your back with your head slightly elevated.

First 24 hours: no strenuous exercise or alcohol

High-intensity exercise increases blood flow and body temperature, which may affect how the product settles. Avoid cardio or strenuous exercise for 24 hours.

Alcohol dilates blood vessels and increases the risk of bruising. Avoid it for 24 hours as well.

First 48 Hours: Avoid Heat

Avoid saunas, steam rooms, and hot yoga for 48 hours: heat increases circulation and inflammation and may affect the result. When washing your face, use lukewarm rather than hot water.

If you have had filler, also avoid pressure

Aftercare for botulinum toxin and fillers overlaps considerably, but fillers come with an additional restriction. The product is placed in a specific position, and pressure may cause it to shift.

For 48 to 72 hours, avoid any pressure on the area: do not sleep on that side, wear tight-fitting glasses, or massage it.

What Is Not on the List

You can go about your normal routine. Work, walk, eat, and apply makeup after the time your provider recommends. Restrictions are specific and temporary; the rest of your day does not change.

If something unexpected occurs—pain that worsens instead of easing, a change in skin color, or altered vision—it is not a routine aftercare issue. Contact the clinic immediately.
